Yesterday, September 28, was the second anniversary of our user group. Two years ago a small group of Heurist users decided to pool together their common interest in the platform and to share their experiences with the research community by creating a user group.
During this period, the group has grown to over 15 active members, it has held several meetings, it has been encouraging researchers to use Heurist in their work and its members have been busy contributing posts to the users' blog.
A few days ago, two important events took place.
Firstly, during his recent visit to Athens, Ian Johnson, Honorary Associate of the University of Sydney and developer of Heurist, held two meetings with our group. He started on September 18, with a one-day clinic with three of our more experienced Heurist users. The aim of the clinic was to help them solve specific problems they have encountered in their work, mainly regarding importing of historical maps and handling multilingual term lists. Next day, he held an open workshop at the Digital lab of the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Athens. The workshop began with a general introduction and a presentation of the main components (record types and record fields) and the basic functionalities, such as relationships, simple and faceted searches and the use of term lists. Next, the participants began experimenting with their own databases under Ian's guidance. It was a full five-hour session, with lots of new information to digest.
Secondly, the user group recently became affiliated to DARIAH-GR/DYAS, the Greek national research infrastructure for the arts and humanities. This collaboration, under the umbrella of a broader infrastructure called APOLLONIS, was inaugurated during Ian's visit with a one-day clinic held at the premises of the Academy of Athens on September 20.
The members of the user group enjoyed three days of working with Heurist that were informative, practical, extremely useful and great fun. What a way to mark the second anniversary of the user group.
Many happy returns!!!
